AMHERST, Mass. –
Jonny Novak, Simon Kalinauskus, and
Aidan Curtis scored in a 3-0 win versus non-conference opponents, the Manhattanville College Valiants, on Wednesday night on Gooding Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The home side dominated the first half, but they were unable to capitalize on it to earn a lead. The first half saw Amherst have 7 shots (4 on goal) - 6 more than Manhattanville's singular effort, which sailed high over the crossbar. Shots and headers from Sophomores
Niall Murphy,
Micah Valadez Bush,
Fynn Hayton-Ruffner, and
Simon Kalinauskas would have opened the scoring for Amherst had Manhattanville's goalkeeper not made strong saves in between the posts.
* Amherst's pressure was eventually rewarded in the second half with three stellar goals. Junior
Jonny Novak scored the first one with 39 minutes to go until the final whistle. Novak powered the ball into the goal, with Senior Andrew Barkidija and First-year
Adrian Trott providing the assist.
*
Simon Kalinauskas doubled Amherst's lead 20 minutes later. Hayton-Ruffner obtained possession of the ball on the left side around 30 yards from goal and, with quick footwork, turned past a defender before guiding an accurate diagonal pass. The lofted pass bounced shortly before arriving at Kalinauskas, who was lingering around the back post. Kalinauskas towered above a Manhattanville defender to head the ball down into the goal from short range.
* The Mammoths sealed the win convincingly with the third goal. Shortly after coming back onto the pitch as a substitute, Sophomore
Aidan Curtis found himself with the ball at his feet and a small gap of space inside the penalty box. Curtis took a touch and confidently hammered the ball past the goalkeeper's left into the back of the net. The assist came from strong passing from Hayton-Ruffner and Senior
Nico Kenary during the goal's build-up play.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst continues their unbeaten record; they are 3-0-1 overall record (0-0-1 in NESCAC) for the season.
* Next up: the Mammoths will host the #5 Tufts University Jumbos at 2:30pm on Saturday on Hitchcock Field.
Amherst took 8 corners; Manhattanville got 3.
