Second-half rally lifts Mammoths past Colby, 12-7

AMHERST, Mass. -- Down 5-2 late in the second quarter, the Amherst College men's lacrosse team got up off the mat, outscoring visiting Colby 10-2 over the final 30 minutes and 19 seconds to rally for a 12-7 victory in a game played on Gooding Field.

Amherst senior PJ Clementi had his three goals and one assist come in the second half as the Mammoths' overcame the three-goal deficit. With the victory, the Mammoths improved to 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in the conference. They are at Connecticut College for a 7 p.m. game Wednesday. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Trailing 5-2, Brock Gonzalez scored off a Brodie Rayment assist with only 19 ticks left on the clock before halftime to bring the Mammoths within two at 5-3. That started a five-goal run for Amherst that included the first four goals in the third quarter. 

* Clementi got the third-quarter burst going with a goal and that was followed by scores from Tanyr Krummenacher, Connor Guest and Clementi again for a 7-5 Amherst lead. It was 7-6 Amherst after three full quarters.

* In the fourth quarters' second minute, the Mammoths struck twice as Dylan Hsu took a pass from Bayard Demallie anbd scored at 13:55 and just 46 seconds later, Krummenacher made it 9-6 after receiving a pass from Clementi and scoring. 

* After Colby got back within two at 9-7, goals by Clementi, Gonzalez and Matt Adams helped the Mammoths close out the 12-7 win. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Remarkably, Amherst first-year face-off specialist Nicholas Kopp won all 22 face-offs in the game and led the Mammoths with 14 groundballs. Ryan Rahbany had 5 groundballs and two caused turnovers in the victory. 

* Carson Marano made 8 saves for the Mammoths in goal, two in each quarter of the game. 

* The game had not one, but two, lightning/rain delays at the 9:438 mark of the third quarter.
