Owls fly past Mammoths by 7-2 score

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sam Palmer and Matt Motyka had home runs Tuesday, helping power Westfield State past the Amherst College baseball team, 7-2, at Memorial Field.

The Owls improved to 11-6 overall while Amherst fell to 5-10 on the season. The Mammoths are scheduled to face NESCAC West Division rival Hamilton College back at Memorial Field Friday at 4 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Westfield State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Mammoth starter Sam Robin (0-1) hit Owl lead-off hitter Nick Martin with a pitch and Palmer followed with a two-run blast to left field. In the top of the second, Motyka launched a solo shot to left field for a 3-0 lead.

* Westfield State starter Ryan Donahue held the Mammoths hitless through three and off the scoreboard through five, allowing just two hits while walking six and striking out three. In the Mammoths second, Chris Murphy and Luke Padian worked one-out walks off Donahue, but the hurler induced a double-play grounder off the bat of Daniel Qin to end the threat.

* In the Amherst fourth Jack Dove led off with a double and Donahue issued one-out free passes to Jackson Reydel and Padian to load the bases, but Murphy grounded into an inning-ending double play to keep the score 3-0.

* It would be Reydel who put the Mammoths on the board, leading off the bottom of the sixth against Owl reliever Joe Fischer with a long blast well over the fence in left for his team-leading fourth home run of the season.

*The Owls picked up an insurance run in the top of the eighth on Ethan Day's two-out, RBI-single to left that made it 4-1. Amherst rallied in its half of the eighth when, with two outs and no one on, Ryan McIntyre singled to the shortstop hole and Reydel was walked. Padian dropped in an RBI-single to center field to make it 4-2 and put runners on second and third with two outs, but Matt Mathewson came on to retire Murphy on a fly to center that ended the frame.

* Westfield scored three runs off Mammoth reliever Alan Dai in the ninth to take a 7-2 lead. The Mammoths loaded the bases with two outs in their half of the ninth on to Qin and Jack McDermott. With two outs, Dove singled to left, but Owl reliever Joe Espinola got McIntyre on a fly to center to end the contest.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst outhit Westfield State, 6-5, in the contest. Palmer went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored for the Owls. Dove was 2 for 5 for the Mammoths.
