Sweep of Cards nets Mammoths Little 3 Championship, 1st Place Finish in West Division

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --  Randi Finkelstein remained red-hot at the plate Saturday, going 4 for 5 with three runs scored and three RBIs to help the Amherst College softball team to a 10-4, 2-0 sweep of NESCAC West Division rival and the 2022 Little 3 Championship as well as a first-place finish in the West Division.

The Mammoths improved to 21-7 overall, 9-3 in the West, while the Cardinals fell to 13-18 overall and 4-8 in the NESCAC West. Amherst, the top seed out of the West for the upcoming 2022 NESCAC Tournament, will face Bowdoin, the fourth-seed out of the NESCAC East, in a tournament quarterfinal Friday, May 6 at 5 p.m. at host Tufts University.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Finkelstein, who hit a game-winning walk-off home run in the bottom of the 7th inning Friday, gave Amherst a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener Saturday when she lined an two-out, RBI-single that scored Dani Torres Werra, who had walked. The Mammoths added two unearned runs in the second on just one hit, a single by Audrey Orlowski, and a pair of Cardinal errors.

* In the third, Finkelstein launched a one-out triple and raced home ahead of the throw on Virgina Ryan's grounder for a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, America Rangel and Jess Butler had one-out singles in front of an RBI-double by Torres Werra. Sadie Pool made it 6-1 with an RBI-groundout.

* In the sixth, Butler drew a walk and Pool singled prior to Finkelstein's at-bat in which she lined a two-run double into the right-center field gap for an 8-4 lead. Butler had an RBI-single in the 7th and Torres Werra drove in another run to account for the 10-4 final.

* Finkelstein was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Rangel was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Butler was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

* Orlowski (5-2) earned the win, going the first five innings and allowing two runs. Torres Werra earned her second save, allowing two runs over the final three innings.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths managed only four hits in the nightcap, scoring a run in the second and adding an insurance run in the seventh. In the meantime, Torres Werra was in firm control, scattering six hits from the circle and not walking a batter. She received great defensive support as well, as Rangel ran down five putouts in center field and Finkelstein had three putouts and one assist at second base. The Mammoths did not commit an error.

* The shutout was Torres Werra's fourth of the season. She improved to 9-2.

*The Mammoths got on the board in the second when Finkelstein drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a groundout and scored when Orlowski laced an RBI-single to left. In the Amherst seventh, Finkelstein tripled and scored on an error for the 2-0 lead.
