AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore
Luke Padian capped a Senior Day celebration to remember Saturday at Memorial Field, rapping a hard grounder up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to score two runners and give the Amherst College baseball team a 15-14 win over rival Williams and a sweep of their doubleheader with the Ephs.
A 9-5 win in the opener Saturday clinched a berth in the 2022 NESCAC Baseball Tournament for the Mammoths, who will travel to Brunswick, Maine next Saturday for a best-of-three quarterfinal series with Bowdoin, the top team in the NESCAC East Division.Â
The Saturday Senior Day sweep improved Amherst's overall record to 14-16-1 and 5-7 in the NESCAC's West Division. Williams fell to 8-17 overall and 2-9 in divisional play. The Mammoths conclude regular-season play Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at UMass-Boston.Â
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst led 6-1 early but trailed 12-8 entering the bottom of the ninth and 14-12 going into the bottom of the 10th.Â
* With one out in the Amherst 9th,
Christian Limon was hit with a pitch.
Jack Dove followed with a double down the right-field line to put runners on second and third.
Ryan McIntyre then hit a deep fly ball the opposite way that seemed to hit the top of the fence and bounce over for a three-run homer that cut the Williams lead to 12-11.
Jack McDermott was next up and he was plunked with a pitch and took second when
Jackson Reydel follwed with a single through the left side. Padian then lined a shot into center that was misplayed, allowing McDermott to score the tying run. Williams elected to intentionally walk
Daniel Qin to load the bases and Eph reliever James Murray fanned the next two Mammoths to send the game to extra frames.Â
* Amherst reliever
Trevor Gasgarth retired the first two batters he faced in the 10th, but then a walk, single and walk loaded the bases for Eph Billy Shea, who dropped a two-run single into right field for a 14-12 lead.
* With one out in the bottom of the frame, Dove beat out an infield single on a grounder to third. McIntyre then singled to left. McDermott drew a walk that loaded the bases. Reydel grounded out to first for the second out, but scored Dove to make it 14-13 Williams. That brought up Padian with two outs and runners on second and third and his hard grounder back up the middle was too fast for a diving Eph second baseman, scoring McIntyre and McDermott with the winning runs and giving Amherst a 15-14 victory.Â
