MIDDLEBURY, VT. -- The Middlebury College baseball team broke open a scoreless tie with five runs in the third inning Friday en route to a 16-0 defeat of Amherst College in the opening game of a weekend three-game West Division series.
The Mammoths fell to 9-15-1 overall and 1-6 in divisional play while Middlebury improved to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in the NESCAC West. The two teams are back at in Saturday with a doubleheader slated to start at 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst had three hits in the loss.
Christian Fagnant went 1 for 2 while
Luke Padian and
Chris Murphy each went 1 for 3.
* John Collins had three home runs and six RBI for the victors. Alex Price threw seven shutout innings to earn his third victory, striking out nine.
Sachin Nambiar (0-4) took the loss for the Mammoths.
