Friedman scores in overtime to lift #19 Amherst to 9-8 win at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – First-year Lauren Friedman scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Amherst College women's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over archrival Williams in a NESCAC clash on Saturday evening at Farley-Lamb Field.

The Mammoths, ranked 19th in the nation in the latest ILWomen/IWLCA Division III Poll, improved to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in NESCAC play with their third straight win, while the Ephs dropped to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday, April 23, hosting undefeated and top-ranked Middlebury for a 2 p.m. showdown on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* After Grace Collier scored first to put the Ephs on the board, Eliza Marcus responded with an equalizer for the Mammoths less than a minute later. Friedman and senior captain Becky Kendall added goals before the first quarter was up.

* The two rivals traded goals throughout the second and third quarters. Each time Williams scored to get back within one, Amherst answered to restore a two-goal lead.

* The Ephs finally drew level in the fourth quarter as Isabel Arvelo scored with eight minutes on the clock and Claudia Russell netted her second of the game less than a minute later to give Williams a 7-6 lead.

* Marina Bevacqua scored for the Mammoths with just under six minutes to go to tie the score at 7-7 with what ended up being the last goal in regulation, sending the game to overtime.

* Five minutes into extra time, Sydney Larsen set up Friedman, who scored her second goal of the evening to win the game for the Mammoths. It was the second overtime game-winner for Friedman this season after she netted the decisive goal in the overtime win over McDaniel on March 17.
