AMHERST, Mass. -- First-year
Lauren Friedman scored four goals Tuesday night as the Amherst College women's lacrosse team roared to a 6-0 lead over Springfield and never looked back en route to a 16-5 victory at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
Amherst, ranked #23 in the latest IL/IWLCA Top 25 poll, evened its record at 1-1. They host #8 Tufts University Saturday at 1 p.m.. The Pride fell to 2-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* In addition to Friedman's big night -- she also had an assist - senior
Becky Kendall scored three times and four other Mammoths (
Sydney Larsen,
Fiona Jones,
Ashley Tucker,
Elizabeth Rose) had two goals each.
* Sophomore
Eliza Marcus got the scoring started just 30 seconds into the game when she bulled her way through three Pride defenders and let loose with a point-blank shot that found the top right corner for a 1-0 lead. For the next seven minutes, neither team could score with Springfield goalie Haley Moody making a couple of big stops.
* Finally, with 7:06 left in the first quarter, the Mammoths possession time paid off when Friedman made a run to goal and was awarded a free position shot. She converted the attempt for a 2-0 advantage. Only 43 seconds later, Friedman scored again, curling around a screen and creating shooting space for herself as she fired a shot past Moody for a three-goal Amherst lead.
* With 3:54 to go in the first, Tucker converted a free position opportunity.
Ali Astrachan set up the next goal with a pinpoint pass to Jones, who was open in the slot and quickly fired a shot over the shoulder of Moody for a 5-0 lead. With 20 seconds left in the opening stanza, Kendall made in 6-0. In a man-up situation, Kendall beat her defender as she raced to the goal. Astrachan found the Mammoth sniper with another great pass and Kendall finished with a nice shot past Moody.
* The second quarter opened with Springfield scoring three of the period's first four goals to make it a 7-3 goals as Taylor Pichel, Maddie Roy and Katie Martel found the back of the net. Amherst countered with two big goals before halftime to restore its six-goal advantage. Friedman scored her third of the half with 2:58 remaining and with only 16 ticks of the clock to go, it was Friedman playing the role of playmaker as she set uyp Larsen's first goal of the night.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst finished with a 35-18 shot advantage on the night and a 16-7 edge in groundballs.
* The Mammoths' defensive pressure forced Springfield into 19 turnovers. Jones had two caused turnovers.
* Moody made nine saves for the Pride while
Caroline Fischer had six for Amherst.
