AMHERST, Mass. -- P.J.
Clementi and
Brock Gonzalez scored four goals each as the Amherst College men's lacrosse team won its first game played since March 10th, 2020, topping Hamilton 11-9 at Pratt Field at
Lehrman Stadium in front of a crowd of 100.
Amherst head coach
Sean Woods earned a victory in his first game since taking over the program August 16th of last year.
The Mammoths (1-0) are at #3 Tufts Saturday, March 12th for a 1 p.m. start.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths scored the only three goals on the third quarter to erase a one-goal deficit and take a 7-5 lead.
Tanyr Krummenacher tied the game at 5-5 when he scored off a pass from Bayard
Demallie 58 seconds into the third quarter.
Clementi then scored the only man-up goal of the game, off another assists from Demallie for a 6-5 lead with 2:08 to go in the quarter. The sharpshooter tallied an unassisted goal with only five seconds remaining for a 7-5 Amherst lead going into the final stanza.
* After Hamilton's Tim
Sommer scored 40 seconds into the frame to make it 7-6,
Brock Gonzalez took over for the Mammoths. The junior
attackman scored two nearly identical goals from
Clementi off passes from behind the Hamilton goal only 29 seconds apart, then added a third consecutive tally 1:41 later to give the Mammoths a 10-6 lead with just over 11 minutes to go in the game.
* The Continentals rallied to make it 10-9 with straight goals of their own. After a timeout with 33 seconds left.
Clementi had possession in the right corner behind the net. He battled two Continental defenders who were attempting to cause a turnover, but somehow
Clementi emerged out of the melee and raced toward the goal, catching the Hamilton goalie out of the net. As he approached the net,
Clementi flung himself airborne and backhanded a shot into the open goal with 24 seconds, cementing the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst finished with a 46-34 edge in shots and 36-34 advantage in ground balls.
* Hamilton had 21 turnovers to the Mammoths 19. Hamilton goalie Seamus Fagan made 20 saves while Amherst's Carson
Marano stopped seven.
