ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cardinals All-American attack Nicholas Miller scored in overtime to lift St. John Fisher College to a 14-13 win over the Amherst College men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The Mammoths faced an early deficit and repeatedly rallied but the Cardinals scored the final two goals of the game to force overtime and seal the win.
The reigning Empire 8 champion Cardinals, ranked fifth in the nation in the latest USILA Division III Poll, improved to 6-1 on the season while the 11th-ranked Mammoths fell to 3-3.
The Mammoths are back in action on Tuesday (March 29) at 7 p.m. with a visit to Western Massachusetts rival Western New England.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Cardinals raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game but the Mammoths then swung the momentum in their favor. Amherst went on a 7-1 run over the rest of the first quarter and into the second. Senior midfielder
Carter Tate scored back-to-back goals early in the second to tie the game at 6-6. Junior midfielder Bayard Demallie game the Mammoths their first lead when he struck with 9:48 to go in the second quarter.
* Miller scored to tie the game at 7-7 but junior midfielder
Tanyr Krummenacher responded less than a minute later to put the Mammoths back on top and junior attack
Brock Gonzalez scored 65 seconds after Krummenacher to give Amherst a 9-7 halftime lead.
* The Cardinals scored three straight to open the third quarter with senior attack Ian Evans scoring a pair to tie the game before Miller put the Cardinals up by one. Tate's fourth goal of the game evened the score at 10-10 before Cardinals sophomore midfielder Jordan Leuze scored and Mammoths sophomore defender
Ryan Rahbany answered with his first collegiate goal to end the quarter.
* SJFC midfielder Jack Mulvihill opened the scoring in the fourth to put the Cardinals back on top but senior captain
PJ Clementi answered for the Mammoths. The score was deadlocked at 13-13 for much of the fourth quarter until Gonzalez scored with 3:13 on the clock to give the Mammoths a 13-12 lead. Leuze scored with 2:02 remaining to tie the score once again and send the game to overtime.
* Miller scored his fifth goal of the game with 19 seconds left in the first overtime period to deliver the Cardinals the win with his 21st goal of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Tate led the Mammoths in scoring, tallying four goals and an assist for the second straight game.
* Gonzalez and Clementi each recorded hat tricks. Clementi has scored multiple goals and Gonzalez has scored a hat trick in every game this season.
* Sophomore goalie Ben Hammond made 12 saves to earn the win for St. John Fisher, while first-year
Mitch Likins made a career-best 16 saves for Amherst.
* The Cardinals held a 16-15 edge in face-offs and a 45-31 advantage in ground balls.
