Mammoths slam Rowan in Florida Finale, 9-1

AUBURNDALE, FL. -- Jacob Ribitzki pitched eight innings of one-run ball Friday night and Christian Fagnant launched a grand slam home run in the third inning as the Amherst College baseball team concluded its spring break trip to Florida with a 9-1 victory over Rowan University in front of a crowd of 89 at Lake Myrtle Park.

Amherst heads home with a 4-2 record. The Mammoths host Wheaton College March 25th at 3:30 p.m. Rowan fell to 8-3 with the loss.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second, all coming with two outs. Fagnant and Jack Dove worked back-to-back walks before Jackson Reydell rifled a line drive RBI-single to right field for a 1-0 lead. Dove scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead as Reydell moved up to second. Jack Boyle scored him with a single to right for the 3-0 lead.

* The Mammoths added four in the third on one swing of the bat. Jack McDermot drew a lead-off walk and Luke Padian was plunked with a pitch just above the knee. Chris Murphy hit a line drive an inch over the leaping shortstop's glove to load the bases. Fagnant then drilled a long blast down the right field line. The left-handed batter's drive began to curve toward the foul pole, but instead of going foul, clanged off the ball nearly three-quarters of the way up for a grand slam home run and a 7-0 lead.

* Ribitzki did the rest. In control from the start, he kept the Rowan line-up off balance with a mixture off-speed offerings that complemented his fastball. Over eight innings, he allowed only five hits and two walks while striking out one. Of his 24 outs recorded, 17 came on flyballs to te outfield.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Both Murphy and Reydell finished 3 for 4 on the night to pace the Mammoths' eight-hit attack. Reydell was in the middle of a two-run sixth for the Mammoths, lining a frozen rope to deep right center for an RBI-triple and scoring on Jack Boyle's groundout for a 9-0 lead.
