LEESBURG, FL --
Dani Torres Werra threw a complete-game, 2-hit shutout and homered in her collegiate debut Sunday as the Amherst College softball team opened its 2022 season with a split of two games at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.
The Mammoths (1-1) are back at it Monday with a 10 a.m. game vs. Ripon College and a 12:30 p.m. contest against Endicott College. These games will be played at Hancock Park.
Amherst 4, Simpson 0
Torres Werra faced just three batters over the minimum in the victory, allowing two singles and a walk while striking out six over seven frames. After being shutout in their opener, the Mammoth bats came alive against Simpson, banging out 12 hits.
Rachel Lovejoy led off the game with a home run and finished 3 for 3 at the plate with a walk, RBI and two runs scored.
After Lovejoy's lead-off homer in the first,
Autumn Lee reached on an error,
Jess Butler drew a walk and
Sadie Pool singled to load the bases. A walk to
Virginia Ryan forced home Lee with the second run of the inning. It would stayed 2-0 until the fifth, when Torres Werra launched a solo home run to left field for a three-run lead.
In the Amherst sixth, consecutive singles to start the frame by
Megan Taketa, Lovejoy and Lee loaded the bases with no outs. After a force out at home, Butler lofted a sacrifice fly that scored Lovejoy with the final run.
Rowan 13, Amherst 0 (5 inn.)
The Mammoths were limited to three singles and two doubles by a pair of Professor hurlers. Lovejoy, Ryan, Taketa, Lee and
Randi Finkelstein collected the safeties. Finkelstein and Taketa had the doubles.
