Mammoths push win streak to 3 games with wins over Ripon, Endicott

CLERMONT, FLA. -- Talia Bloxham threw eight scoreless innings Monday to earn a win and a save while Randi Finkelstein blasted a grand slam as the Amherst College softball team swept a pair of Spring Games opponents at Hancock Park.

Bloxham did start either game but managed to be a key component in both a 9-3 win over Ripon College and a 5-2 victory over Endicott College. While the Mammoths ran their win streak to three and improved to 3-1 overall, Bloxham mirrored that success, improving to 1-1 with one save.

Amherst has Tuesday off before getting back at it Wednesday with a 12 pm game against Carthage and a 4:30 p.m. game versus Arcadia.

Game One
* Ripon built a 3-0 lead after two innings. Devynn Wildermann started the Amherst comeback with a two-run double in the fourth. In the Amherst fifth, Virginia Ryan led off with a pinch-hit walk. Rachel Lovejoy followed with a single through the left side. Megan Taketa dropped down a bunt she beat out for a base hit that loaded the bases. After an error allowed Ryan to score the tying run, Finkelstein cleared the bases with a frozen rope over the left-field fence for a grand slam home run and a 7-3 Amherst lead.

* Bloxham relieved Audrey Orlowski at the start of the Ripon third. She went five frames, allowing only two hits and no runs while walking two and striking out seven. She earned her first victory of the season.

*The Mammoths added two runs in the sixth, the highlight of which was America Rangel's steal of home.

* Amherst had nine hits in the win. Jess Butler was 2 for 3. Finkelstein was 1 for 2 with two walks, two runs scored and 4 RBIs.

Game Two
* Amherst took a 2-0 lead over Endicott in the bottom of the second. With two outs and nobody on, Rangel singled to right center. An error on a pick-off play allowed her to move to second. Taketa then drew a walk. Rachel Lovejoy then walked to loaded the bases. Autumn Lee came back from an 0-2 count to work it full and then hit the 3-2 pitch just inside the bag and down the right-field line for a two-run double.

* Endicott tied the game with two of its own off Amherst starter Dani Torres Werra in the fourth. Katie Watts had an RBI-single and later scored on a passed ball.

* The Mammoths answered immediately with three runs in their half of the fourth. Rangel walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Taketa walked. After an out, Lee walked to load the bases. After an infield fly for the second out, Sadie Pool stepped to the plate and ripped an base hit through the right side of the infield that scored Rangel and Taketa for a 4-2 lead. Mia Castro grounded an RBI-single through the left side of the infield to produce the fifth and final Amherst run.

* Bloxham came on after Torres Werra tired in the fourth and threw three scoreless innings of relief. She retired all nine batters she faced -- three perfect innings -- fanning five of those nine to earn her first save.

* Amherst added nine more hits to the ledger. Lee was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Ryan was also 2 for 3.
