Mammoths open season with 13-0 shutout of Anderson

AUBURNDALE, FL. -- Jacob Ribitzki fanned nine over 5 1/3 shutout innings Sunday as the Amherst College baseball team opened it 2022 campaign with a 13-0 shutout over Anderson (Ind.) University at Lake Myrtle Park. The game was shortened to 7 innings due to a run-rule.

The Mammoths (1-0) will face Ripon (Wisc.) College Monday at 9:30 a.m. back at Lake Myrtle. Anderson fell to 5-6 on the season with the loss.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths pounded out 15 hits in the victory. Sophomore Christian Fagnant, junior Jack Dove and first-year Jack McDermott had three hits each. Ryan McIntyre and Chris Murphy had two hits each in the victory. Five different Mammoths had two RBIs each.

* Amherst jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first and scored at least one run in each of the first five frames. In the first, McDermott ignited things with an opposite-field double down the left-field line for his first collegiate hit. Luke Padian then served a single back up the middle with two outs to score McDermott with the game's first run. Murphy singled to left and both runners moved up a base on an failed pick-off attempt at second. Fagnant then ripped a gass-cutter just ou of the reach of the first baseman to score both runners for a 3-0 lead.

* McDermott had a long, two-out, two-run double to left in the third to make it 7-0 Mammoths. They added five more in the top of the fourth for a 12-0 lead. McIntyre had the big hit, a grounder through the left side that scored two runners.

* Ribitski looked to be in mid-season form rather than making his first start of the year. He allowed only three hits and walked just one until he was lifted after striking out the first batter of the bottom of the sixth. He had the Anderson batters off balance all game. as six of his strikeout were of the swinging variety, the majority on off-speed offerings, and then thee looking at well-place fastballs on the outside corner of the plate. Trevor Gasgarth came on and completed the shutout with 1 2/3 innings of solid relief work.
