Amherst skates to 1-1 tie with Colby

WATERVILLE, Me. -- The Amherst College women's hockey team played a contentious game against Colby College on Saturday night, fighting through three periods of shooting with only one goal a piece on either side. An intense overtime nonetheless ended in a tie, leaving Amherst with an 11-8-2 record, and Colby at 15-3-1. Amherst will play at Colby again Sunday. The puck drops at 3 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst started the scoring early on with Kate Pohl and Elizabeth Houbiak assisting Carly Daly in a decisive rush to the net. It marked Carly's first goal of the season.

* Partway through the first period, Amherst laid down 6 consecutive shots in just over two minutes. Aside for the first shot by Ana Baxter, which went wide, all were either saved by Colby goaltender Nina Prunster or blocked by other players before reaching the net.

* Colby answered this offensive with a flurry of shots of their own, taking 5 consecutively in under two minutes. All five were saved by Amherst goaltender Caitlin Walker, who

* After Colby neatly took possession of the puck after Amherst won the first face-off of the second period, they took it down the ice and made a clean lateral pass to Madi Aumann, who slashed in a gol while Amherst's Caitlin walker was still trying to shift to cover the right side of the net. With this, Madi tallied her first goal of the season.

* Although Colby earned a power play after Amherst's Anna Baxter incurred a penalty for cross-checking, Amherst defense stood its ground and fended off all eight shots from Colby during the two minute period.

* With the game tied at the end of the third period, Colby put the pressure on and made 9 shots total over the 5 minute period. Amherst's Caitlin Walker was up to the task, however, and made saves on all 7 shots that were on target.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Colby maintained constant pressure on the Amherst defense, making 41 shots on goal against Amherst' 24.

* Caitlin Walker proved to be a force to be reckoned with at the net, maintaining a save percentage of 0.976.

* Finley Carpa and Tate Senden led the attack for Colby, each making 10 shots over the course of the game.
