Three-goal third period pushes Mammoths past Camels, 4-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Amherst College men's hockey team scored three times in the third period Friday night to break open a closely contested battle with Connecticut College and post a 4-1 victory at Dayton Arena.

With the victory, Amherst improved to 9-9-2 overall and 8-6-1 in the conference. The Camels slipped to 5-10-3 and 4-8-2 overall. The Mammoths are back in action Saturday at 3 p.m. on the road at Tufts University.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Connor McGinnis put the Mammoths on the board at the 14:20 mark of the second period with his second goal of the season. With Amherst on the power-play, Pieter von Steinbergs found Sean Wrenn down low in the left-face-off circle. Wrenn pinpointed a pass across the slot to McGinnis stationed in the other face-off circle, and he one-time a shot into the short side for a 1-0 lead.

* The game was tied 1-1 heading into the third period. But just 2:51 into the final stanza, von Steinbergs won a puck in his own defensive zone and sent a beautiful pass through the neutral zone onto the tape of Matteo Mangiardi, sending the forward in on a breakaway chance. Mangiardi converted, a slipping a shot between the pads of the Camel goalie for a 2-1 lead.

* Wrenn made it a 3-1 game with 10:44 remaining with a mirror image power-play goal of McGinnis tally in the second. A clear attempt was stopped by McGinnis at the blueline and he got the puck to Mangiardi, who found Wrenn in the lower left of the left face-off circle. This time it was Wrenn who one-time a shot into the goal for a 3-1 lead.

* With 6:34 remaining, it was Ben Kuzma who put the game to rest, scoring off a pass from Connor Merrill
