Avery Flynn scored a power-play goal in each of the first two periods while senior goaltender
Caitlin Walker made 26 saves Monday night as the Amherst College women's hockey team won a 2-1 contest over conference rival Wesleyan at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
Amherst improved to 7-7-0 overall and 4-5-0 in conference play while the Cardinals slipped to 6-8-0 overall and 2-7-0 in NESCAC action. The two teams are back at it Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Spurrier-Snyder for the second game of the two-game set.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
* The first half of the first period was tightly contested and evenly played, but at the 15:45 mark, Amherst capitalized on the power play off a rebound, as Flynn cleaned up the original shot from
Rylee Glennon.Â
* It stayed 1-0 for much of the second period, but again the Mammoths were able to take advantage with a Cardinal in the penalty box when Flynn scored her second goal of the night on a slapshot with traffic in front of the net with only 27 seconds remaining in the stanza. That goal was assisted by Glennon and
Leslie Schwartz.
* Early in the third period, Wesleyan had a 5-on-3 power play, but Walker came up with four saves and the Mammoths got some great work from their penalty kill units to keep their two-goal advantage.
* With 1:12 remaining in the game, Wesleyan did get on the scoreboard, taking advantage of an extra skater situation, but Amherst was able to rde out the final 72 seconds to hold on to the 2-1 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Each team had 27 shots on goal and three penalties. Amherst finished 2 for 3 on the power-play while the Cardinals were 0 for 2. Both teams were called for three penalties in the game. Face-offs were just about even. with Wesleyan holding a 26-25 advantage.Â
