NEW LONDON, N.H. – Chargers sophomore Kevin Cummings scored 21 points as Colby-Sawyer College used a late first-half run to claim an 81-69 victory over the Amherst College men's basketball team on Thursday evening at the Hogan Sports Center.
Both teams' records now stand at 3-4. Amherst is back in action on Tuesday (Dec. 6), returning home to host Springfield in LeFrak Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first quarter of the game saw the two squads match each other nearly basket for basket as neither team took a lead of more than two points until a layup from first-year
Chris Hammond gave the Mammoths a 28-25 lead with 8:42 remaining in the first half.
* The Mammoths shot 12-of-19 from the floor through that point with Hammond scoring 10 points, while much of Colby-Sawyer's offense came from Cummings, who scored 13 in that opening stretch as part of a 19-point first half.
* The Chargers quickly reclaimed the lead as a basket from Kadir Arca was followed by a three-pointer from Omar Boone, but Hammond responded with a jumper to tie the score at 30-30.
* From there, the Chargers went on a 16-4 run that proved to be the turning point of the game, hitting 6-of-6 shots from the floor and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc as Scott Lampron bookended the run with three-pointers.
* After Colby-Sawyer took a 48-38 lead to the half, the Mammoths opened the second half with scores on back-to-back possessions by
Will Scherer to cut the lead to six. The Chargers answered with baskets on three straight possessions to push the lead to 13 and kept the score at arm's length for the rest of the contest.
