Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#11 Mammoths iced by Continentals, 2-0

AMHERST, MA  -- Despite outshooting their opponent 24-23, the Amherst College women's hockey team fell to conference rival Hamilton, 2-0, at Orr Rink Saturday afternoon. 

The 11th-ranked Mammoths fell to 1-1-0 with the loss while the Continentals improved to 1-1-0. Amherst is at the University of New England Tuesday for a 4 p.m. puck drop. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The first period was scoreless, but the Mammoths had an 11-9 advantage in shots. First-year goaltender Natalie Stott ran her scoreless periods streak to four at the start of her career with nine saves. The Mammoths had a power-play for the final 1:50 of the frame but had three shots, two from Avery Flynn, blocked. 

* Hamilton finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Nina Shaikh 1:28 into the second stanza. Hamilton's Lydia Bullock drew a roughing penalty at the 8:11 mark and the Mammoths went back on the power play. Anna Baxter and Maeve Reynolds won a couple of key face-offs in the woman-up situation, but Hamilton goalie Evie Sheridan was up to the challenge Carley Daly and Flynn had shots but Sheridan stopped both of them. 

* Hamilton took a 2-0 lead with 4:40 remaining in the game on a goal by Claire McGennis, The Mammoths would have one final power-play opportunity with 2:13 remaining in the game and pulled Stott out of her goal for a 6-on-4 advantage, but could not get on the board despite a good chance by Leslie Schwartz

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Stott finished with 21 saves, Sheridan 24. 

* There were only 3 penalties in the game, all called against Hamilton. Amherst went 0 for 3 on the power play.

* The Mammoths won 30 of 55 face-offs in the contest, with Reynolds winning 13 of the 19 draws she took.
