ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore
Patience Kum scored the only goal of the game to help the #8 Amherst College women's soccer team progress to the Round of 16 with a 1-0 win versus the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers at Tiger Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was the seventh straight shutout and 12th straight win for the Mammoths. Amherst's win places it into the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championship. The Mammoths will play the #6 William Smith College Herons on Saturday. Time and location TBA.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Both teams began the game demonstrating their deservedly high levels of confidence.
Patience Kum took the first shot of the game during the 12th minute before RIT forced the first save of the game with an effort to the bottom center of goal that was saved by Amherst's goalkeeper, junior
Mika Fisher.
* Four minutes later, Amherst created their second scoring opportunity of the game. This time, the Mammoths' efforts led to the all-important goal to put the Mammoths 1-0 up. Kum picked up the ball a few yards out from behind the penalty box. Kum completed a short pass to senior
Alexa Juarez who took a touch before sliding the ball in between a group of five RIT defenders back to Kum. Kum ran onto the ball and took her first touch from well inside of the penalty box. Kum then placed the ball into the far bottom corner of the goal - past the goalkeeper who had left her goal-line in an attempt to close down the NESCAC Player of the Year. The goal marked Kum's second in two days and eighth of the season. Amherst dominated the remainder of the first half in terms of possession of the ball and shots on goal.
* The second half began with a shot from junior
Abby Schwartz before a cagey period ensued with neither team able to create promising attacking chances and the ball remained in the middle third of the field for the majority of play.
Mika Fisher was relied upon in the 74th minute to stop Jillian Antol's shot to the top left corner and keep Amherst in the lead. Fisher's two saves throughout the game and Amherst's superb defending and organized teamwork secured their seventh successive shutout and an impressive twelfth win on the bounce.
