CLEVELAND, Ohio —The #8 Amherst College women's soccer team narrowly lost to the #6 William Smith College Herons 2-1 in the NCAA Championship Elite 16 on Saturday afternoon on DiSanto Field.
The loss knocks Amherst out of the NCAA Tournament and end's the Mammoths' 2022 season. The Mammoths end with a record of 18-3-0.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* All three of the game's goals occurred within quick succession of each other between the thirty- and the forty-minute mark. William Smith netted the first two goals one-and-half minutes apart before Amherst pulled one back less than two minutes later in the game's most exciting spell of attacking football. The Herons' first came directly from an intercepted Amherst clearance attempt; Ava Ruppersberger then capitalized on the opportunity to mark her eighth goal of the season with a clinical show directed low to the right. Maggie Speckhert converted William Smith's second goal. Speckhart fired a shot into the top right corner almost immediately after the Herons' first goal.
* Amherst pulled a goal back in the 36th minute and sophomore
Patience Kum was the goal scorer. Kum, who was named NESCAC Player of the Year and NESCAC Player of the Week on two occasions, smashed a shot inside the goalpost to the goalkeeper's left side. Senior Isabelle assisted Kum's ninth goal of the season with a through pass into the penalty box.
* The second half wasn't as attacking as the first half and neither team was able to create another goal. The Mammoths dominated the majority of play and held most of the possession throughout the period. In the 45 minutes, the away side took four more shots than William Smith's three. The Heron's goalkeeper, Kirsten Nelson, performed remarkably to stop the 2022 NESCAC Champions from converting an equalizing goal; In the 78th minute, Nelson made diving stops on shots from Kum and senior
Isabel Stern.
