AMHERST, Mass. — Sophomores Fynn-Hayton Ruffner and
Aidan Curtis netted two first-half goals in a 2-0 victory versus the #17 Wesleyan University Cardinals on Saturday afternoon on Hitchcock Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* It took just eight-and-a-half minutes and two shots for Amherst to take the lead. Amherst's first goal began when Junior
Ada Okorogheye, with his back to the goal, turned past a Wesleyan defender and sprinted with the ball to approach the penalty box. He then threaded a pass through several players where fellow Junior teammate,
Shawn Rapal, accelerated to beat the onrushing goalkeeper to meet the ball and try to convert the move into a goal. Rapal's shot ricocheted off the Wesleyan goalkeeper, Liam Devanny, and it fell to Hayron-Ruffner. Amherst's September student-athlete of the month and the Mammoths' top-scorer demonstrated his striker's instinct and confidence to roll the ball into the middle of the goal - past Devanny who was desperately retreating to the goal line.
* Just over half an hour later and three minutes before half time, the Mammoths doubled the lead. Senior
Andrew Barkidjija took a long throw from the right sideline - aimed at the penalty box. Competing with a group of Amherst players to meet the ball, Devanny weakly punched it a few meters away. In a moment of brilliance,
Aidan Curtis athletically sprinted up and, whilst in the air, kicked the ball over his head to score a fantastic bicycle kick - to the amazement of the cheering home crowd.
* The second half began with Amherst 2-0 up and concluded with the same scoreline. Amherst were dogged in the middle of the field and were determined not to give Wesleyan any opportunity to progress forward and attack Amherst's defensive line. Amherst's goalkeeper, Senior
Bernie White, wasn't given a single save to make throughout the second half and he eased to his third consecutive shutout.

*Amherst now holds a 7-1-3 overall record (2-1-3 in NESCAC) for the season.
