AMHERST, Mass. --
Mike Piazza's 4th-and-goal pass from the 6-yard line was batted down to end the game Saturday as the Amherst College football team dropped a heartbreaking 13-7 overtime decision to Little 3 rival Wesleyan on Pratt Field on Lehrman Stadium.
Amherst dropped to 1-6 on the season with the loss. They will host their final home game next Saturday, November 5th, versus Bowdoin. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. and it will be Senior Day for the Mammoths.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Despite nearly doubling the Mammoths in total yardage (378 to 199), the Cardinals did not score an offensive touchdown until overtime. They did score with 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a blocked punt recovered in the end zone and led 7-0 until early in the fourth quarter.
*
Luke Harmon intercepted Wesleyan quarterback David Estevez at the Mammoths' 13-yard line and returned the ball to the Amherst 34. The Mammoths then drove 66 yards for the tying score. Some key plays along the way included a Piazza to
Sam Gerber 6-yard pass on 3rd and 3 that netted a first down; a 14-yard run from
Louie Eckelkamp on 3rd-and-1 from the Cardinal 44-yard line; and a holding call against the Cardinals that negated an interception.
* Facing 3rd-and-10 from the Wesleyan 18,
Jack Roberge ripped off a 13-yard run to the Cardinal 5-yard line that included him hurdling a Wesleyan defender around the 10, landing on his feet, and picking up five additional yards. Two plays later on a 3rd-and-goal from the 4, Piazza hooked up with
Jack Betts near the back of the end zone for a 4-yard TD play with 10:53 remaining in the final stanza.
Conor Kennelly's PAT tied the game, 7-7.
* The Mammoths had two additional possessions in the quarter, but could not score. They had a 1st-and-10 from the Wesleyan 44 late in the quarter but three straight incompletions ended the threat.
* Charlie McPhee's 1-yard TD run gave Wesleyan a 13-7 lead on the Cardinals' first possession in overtime. The Mammoths then faced a 4th-and-10 from their 25 on their first possession needing to score a TD to extend or win the game. Piazza found Betts for a 15-yard gain to the 11 to keep the Amherst hopes alive. However, despite a 7-yard pass completion that left the Mammoths six yards away from the tying score with third and fourth down plays to come, two incompletions ended the game in the favor of Wesleyan.
