Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#10 Amherst beats #23 Trinity 1-0 to finish atop NESCAC; will be home for quarterfinal

HARTFORD, Conn. – An early goal from junior Abby Schwartz was all that the #10 Amherst College women's soccer team needed to overcome #23 Trinity College,1-0, Tuesday.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* In their last game of the regular season, Amherst enjoyed a fantastic start. The Mammoths converted the game's first shot into a goal in the 10th minute. The goal came from a free-kick taken by sophomore Fiona Bernet from 25 yards behind the half-way line in Amherst's defensive half. A long ball forwards in the air toward Trinity's penalty box was met by a header from a Trinity defender that, amid pressure from Schwartz, was directed backwards. The defensive header was situated between the goalkeeper and the two Trinity central defenders who were the outfield players positioned deepest in the field. Without taking her eyes off the ball, Schwartz ran behind the two defenders to beat the Trinity goalkeeper, Mariana Cournoyer, to the ball. Schwartz headed the ball first-time out of the air and past Cournoyer; the ball bounced into the goal - giving Amherst an early 1-0 lead.

* The away side then built on the momentum from their goal to dominate the first half. Sophomore Patience Kum - who was named NESCAC Player of the Week on Monday for her second time after being involved in three of the Mammoths' last four goals - was next to try to double Amherst's lead with a shot that missed high of the goal. Sophomores Carter Hollingsworth and Bernet, First-year Brooke Ingemi, and junior Liza Katz all had efforts during the rest of the first half while Trinity's sole effort in 45 minutes sailed over the goal's crossbar.

* The second period continued in a similar fashion to the first with the away side relentlessly searching for a second goal and Trinity struggling to conjure up any real chance of an equalizing goal. In the last twenty minutes, however, the Bantams found two opportunities for shots on target to test Amherst's goalkeeper, junior Mika Fisher, to make her first two saves of the game. Ultimately, the Mammoths succeeded in earning their eighth clean sheet of the season, and third in the last four games.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst now holds a 13-2-0 overall record (8-2-0 in NESCAC) for the season.

* Up next: This game versus the Bantams culminates Amherst's regular season and the Mammoths will enter the postseason in the beginning game of the NESCAC Championship on Saturday. With Amherst top of the NESCAC standings, they are #1 seed and thus their quarter-final game will be hosted on Hitchcock Field versus the #8 seed, the Connecticut College Camels. The time is slated for 12 p.m..

* Amherst took 14 shots (7 on goal); Trinity took 3 (2 on goal).
