Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#10 Amherst blanks Camels, 3-0, in NESCAC Quarterfinal; will host semifinals and championship

AMHERST, Mass. – A trio of goals gave the #10 Amherst College women's soccer team a 3-0 win over the Connecticut College Camels in the early afternoon on Saturday at Hitchcock Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Saturday's NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal began with the higher-seeded Amherst team on the front foot. The host's first two efforts were off-target headers before the Mammoths began peppering the goal with shots between the twenty- and thirty-minute mark. Amherst's pressure then led to a goal in the 35th minute. The move began with a long, lofted ball from the right side of the field which was controlled by the upper body of junior Abby Schwartz. Schwartz then dribbled the ball around a few defenders before crossing the ball across the goal along the ground to senior Sarah Sullivan who converted the move with a first-time shot from close range. This fantastic team goal was the only one of the half and Amherst entered the break with a slender 1-0 lead.

* In the second half, to go 2-0 up, a through ball was directed in between Conn's two central defenders The ball ended up between an Amherst forward and a goalkeeper and they competed to win the ball with the two players kicking the ball at the same time. The ball ricocheted off the cleats of the two players and fell to junior Lisa Katz who doubled the Mammoths' lead. For the third goal shortly afterward, sophomore Charlotte Huang athletically turned and drilled the ball across the goal into the far bottom corner. The perfectly-placed shot left the Conn goalkeeper, Sarah Hall, with no chance to reach the ball during a diving save to her left side. Conn had few chances during the remainder of the game to get off the mark as Amherst professionally retained control of possession to ease to victory and qualification into the NESCAC Championship semifinals.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst now holds a 14-2-0 overall record (8-2-0 in NESCAC regular season; 1-0-0 in NESCAC post-season) for the season.

* Up next: Amherst's win qualifies them for the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship. Because Amherst finished #1 in the NESCAC regular season standings and the highest-ranked team left in the tournament hosts both the semifinals and final game, Amherst will play at home on Saturday vs. Tufts at 11 a.m. Wesleyan and Trinity will play at 1:30 p.m. in the second semifinal. Sunday's championship game is slated for 12 p.m.

* Amherst took 16 shots (6 on goal); Conn took 7 (5 on goal).
