AMHERST, Mass. – Five first-half goals and a brace for junior
Liza Katz helped the #11 Amherst College women's tennis team blank the Lesley University Lynx 7-0 Sunday afternoon on Hitchcock Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* In its first home game since September 17, Amherst took just two-and-a-half minutes to surpass the Lesley defense to open the scoring. Juniors
Liza Katz and
Abby Schwartz assisted sophomore
Sierra Rosado to score her first goal of the season with the first shot of the game. The Mammoths were not satisfied with a one-goal lead and they continued to apply constant pressure onto the Lynx defenders to search for a second goal. Within another seven minutes, First-year
Brooke Ingemi set-up Schwartz to break the Lesley defensive line again to go 2-0 up.
*Amherst's third goal came directly from a penalty kick, which sophomore
Patience Kum confidently dispatched, after a foul in the penalty box. Two of Kum's sophomore classmates were involved in the fifth goal of the game;
Carter Hollingsworth passed to allow
Alyssa Huynh to join the list of Mammoth scorers. The home side dominated the first 45 minutes of play by rapidly gaining possession of the ball whenever they lost it and refusing to give the Lynx any opportunities to take shots or test Amherst's goalkeeper, junior
Mika Fisher
* In the second half, Amherst's second penalty kick of the game was saved by the Lesley goalkeeper, Audrey Calhorn, with a strong glove to keep sophomore
Charlotte Huang's strike out of the goal. However, Calhorn was not able to save an effort from senior
Sarah Sullivan ten minutes later, which made it six for Amherst. In the 84th minute, Senior
Liza Katz doubled her personal tally and put away Amherst's seventh goal, aided by an assist from junior
Ally Deegan.
