AMHERST, Mass. – First-year
Charlotte Rasmussen recorded a career-high 12 kills to lead the Amherst College volleyball team to a sweep of UMass Boston on Tuesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.
The Mammoths rolled to a 25-17, 25-11, 25-8 victory to improve to 10-6 on the season, while the Beacons fell to 5-16 with their fourth straight loss.
The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 22), hosting Emerson at 2 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium. Amherst's four seniors will be honored before their final regular-season home match.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first set proved to be the tightest, though the Mammoths put together an early run of six straight points to take a 7-2 lead and held the lead for the rest of the set. Five straight points for UMass Boston got the Beacons back within four at 14-10 and a late 6-2 Beacons run had the visitors threatening at 22-17, but the Mammoths responded with three straight points to close the first set with a 25-17 tally.
* The Mammoths got more dominant as the match continued. The second set opened with eight straight Amherst points on the serve of senior
Lani Uyeno and closed with the Mammoths winning eight of the last nine points to take the second set by a 25-11 score. The Mammoths hit .577 in the set with 15 kills and no errors.
* The two sides traded points to open the third set before the Mammoths scored the next 18 straight points with junior
Carly Cooper serving. Cooper served up four aces in the run, including three in a row that made the score 10-1. The two sides played even for the remainder of the match but Amherst's big lead was enough to cruise to a 25-8 third-set score to complete the sweep.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths hit .368 in the match, their best hitting percentage of the season, and held the Beacons to an .053 hitting percentage. Rasmussen, Cooper and junior
Ava O'Connor each hit .500.
* Sophomore
Kinsey Cronin was involved in five blocks to lead the Mammoths, while senior
Jacqueline Kortekaas recorded 11 assists. Cooper and sophomore
Lizzie Papalia each had nine digs.
* Senior Taryn Broughal and sophomore Dylan Wertzberger each tallied five kills to lead the Beacons.
