WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The #11 Amherst College women's soccer team narrowly fell short versus the Williams College Ephs, losing 1-0 in the early afternoon on Saturday on Cole Field.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The game began as a fairly even battle. Both teams took opportunities to attack their opponent's defensive back line. The first two corners of the game were awarded to Williams within three minutes of kick-off, and the game's first shot was also taken by the Ephs, but it was blocked by brave Amherst defending. The Mammoths' first opportunity arrived after eight minutes when Senior
Isabel Stern forced the Williams goalkeeper, Leyla Kamshad, to make an athletic save. Stern's second effort shortly after was a header sent just wide of the goal.
* Despite Amherst posing an attacking threat in the early stages of the first half, it was Williams who opened the scoring. Tori Huang assisted Shae Rashoff to score her first goal of the season and the only goal of the game.
* Going behind didn't faze Amherst and the Mammoths returned to executing fast and accurate passing to retain possession and gradually move the ball to Williams' defensive end of the field. The dynamic team moves which have helped Amherst win their last three matches led to shots from Sophomore SIerra Rosado, Freshman
Brooke Ingemi, Junior
Liza Katz, and Senior
Isabelle Geneve - forcing Williams to make three saves and a block.
* The second half continued in similar fashion to the first. Amherst had six shots in the second half, on top of the five first half efforts, but failed to convert any into the sought-after equalizing goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst now holds a 6-2-0 overall record (3-2-0 in NESCAC) for the season.
* Up next: Amherst will return to Hitchcock Field in Amherst after four consecutive away games to take on non-conference opponents, the Lesley University Lynx, on Sunday at 2pm.
* The Mammoths took 11 shots (6 on goal); Williams took 8 shots (2 on goal).
