Third period score sends Mammoths to 1-0 defeat

AMHERST, Mass. -- Caitlin Walker made 31 saves Saturday night but a Brianna Hill goal early in the third period sent the Williams College women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Amherst College at Orr Rink.

The Mammoths fell to 5-6-0 overall, 2-5-0 in conference play. They are at #9 Norwich Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest. Williams improved to 8-4-0 overall, 4-4-0 in conference play.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
* The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first 20 minutes, with Williams holding an 11-9 advantage in shots. Each team has one power-play opportunity it could not convert.

* Williams held a 25-17 shot advantage after 40 minutes. Each team also had one power-play chance in the second period but Walker and Heiting stood tall to keep the game scoreless. Kate Pohl, who had two goals in the Mammoths Friday night win in Williamstown, had a great scoring chance from just inside the right circle low slot, but Heiting knocked aside her shot with the blocker.

* Hill scored after receiving a pass from Maddie Tix in the slot and beating Walker glove side for the only goal of the game at the 4:05 mark of the third period. The Mammoths outshot the Ephs 8-7 in the final period and had the only power-play chance, but Williams' Heiting turned away all 25 shots she faced in the game to post the shutout.

BY THE NUMBERS

* The Mammoths finished 0 for 3 on the power play in the game. They were out shot 32-25 in total.
