AMHERST, Mass. – The Mammoths used a three goal second quarter to rally back from an early 1-0 deficit as the No. 9 Amherst College field hockey team downed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-1, Wednesday evening at the Gladchuck Field Hockey Complex.
With the win, Amherst improves to 5-0 on the season, while MIT falls to 4-3 overall. The Mammoths return to the field this Saturday, September 25 when they travel to Connecticut College for an 11:00AM conference bout.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Engineers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 3:19 remaining in the opening quarter, as Alice Zehner collected the ball at midfield and dished a pass to Liberty Ladd to spark the scoring play. Quickly turning upfield, Ladd connected with Paige Forester racing to net who powered a low, tough-angle shot inside the far post from the right side.
- Deadlocking the score at one all in the 24th minute, first-year Sam Maynard kicked off a three-goal flurry by the Mammoths in the final 5:52 on the second period, with the Charlestown, Mass. native cleaning up the rebound on a shot from Muffie Mazambani '24.
- Returning the favor 1:15 later, Maynard sent a leading pass down the left sideline to Mazambani. Turning on the jets, Mazambani got a step on her defender to get the angle before ripping a laser into the top right corner.
- Taking a two-goal cushion into halftime, Amherst added an insurance tally on their seventh corner of the contest as Maynard redirected a blast from Beth Williamson '23 over the goal line with 31.0 seconds on the clock.Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kaitlin Broda '23 (5-0) earned the win in goal for the Mammoths, making four saves, while Juliana Strother racked up 11 stops in the losing effort for MIT.
- Amherst owned the advantage in shots (28-6), shots on goal (14-5), and penalty corners (8-5).
