AMHERST, Mass. – Earning consecutive 3-0 victories, the Amherst College volleyball team started off their conference slate on a high note as the Mammoths downed Bates, 25-15, 25-20, 25,15, Friday evening before powering past Colby, 25-13, 25-16, 25-9, a day later to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Amherst returns to action on Friday, September 24 when they travel to Middlebury for a 7:00pm NESCAC clash.
MATCH ONE: Amherst 3, Bates 0
- Totaling 34 kills and a .258 attack percentage in the win over Bates, the Mammoths used big, momentum swinging four-point runs in each set to capture the 25-15, 25-20, 25,15 victory.
- Owning a 16-11 edge in the first set, two aces by Jacqueline Kortekaas '23 and two Bobcats misplays pushed the score to 21-11, before a ball handling error by the visitors handed Amherst the set win.
- Moving to the second set, three kills, an ace and a Bates attack error gave the Mammoths an early 6-2 edge and a lead that they did not relinquish. The Bobcats closed the gap late via a 5-1 run to set the score to 23-20 in favor of the home team, but clutch kills by Jamie Dailey '22 and Caroline Tilton '23 finished off the 25-20 victory.
- The third and decisive set was all Amherst, with the Mammoths using four 3-0 runs to match their first set point differential, 25-15.
- Leading Amherst in kills (11), blocks (2), and digs (9), Dailey had a solid all-around performance for the Mammoths, while Carly Cooper '24 dished out a contest-high 17 assists on the night.
MATCH TWO: Amherst 3, Colby 0
- Holding the Mules to 16-or-fewer points in all three sets, the Mammoths posted 45 total kills to boast a .366 attack percentage in a 3-0 sweep of Colby.
- Registering nine straight points to jump out to a 13-3 lead in the first set, Amherst's big run proved to be the decision maker as the sides went nearly point-for-point down the stretch before a Dailey kill sealed the 25-13 Mammoths' win.
- A back-and-forth start to the second frame turned in Amherst's favor midway through the set, as an Anaya Thomas '25 kill and Papalia service ace kicked off an 11-5 run to give the Mammoths the 25-16 victory.
- Kicking it into another gear with the score set at 11-7 in the third and final set, Amherst rattled off nine straight points before closing out the frame with six more unanswered to earn the 25-9 win.
- Daily's 17 kills led all players, while Cooper and Lizzie Papalia '25 posted match-highs in assists (33) and digs (11), respectively.
