KEENE, N.H. – Recording their second shutout of the season and moving their goal total to 17 on the year, the No. 15 Amherst College field hockey team powered past Keene State College, 7-0, Tuesday evening at the Owl Athletic Complex.
With the win, Amherst improves to 3-0, while Keene State falls to 1-5 overall. The Mammoths return to action this Sunday, Sept. 19 when they host Hamilton College at the Gladchuck Field Hockey Complex on the campus of UMASS-Amherst for an 11:00AM conference bout.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Taking a 1-0 lead with 2:39 remaining in the opening quarter, Muffie Mazambani '24 put the Mammoths ahead as she corralled a dish from Kat Mason '25 near the penalty stroke mark and drove a shot past the Keene State keeper.
- Intercepting an Owl pass at midfield and transitioning the Mammoths into a fast break, senior Sophia Kaplan sparked another Amherst score just 22 seconds later. Getting the ball to the top of the circle on the right side, Natalie Hobbs '23 connected with Mazambani on the far post for the redirect to double the Mammoths' advantage.
- Pushing the score to 3-0 with 12:35 on the clock in the second quarter, Mason collected the ball 40 yards out, sprinted towards net and cut left to get the angle on her defender, and sent a sweeping shot into the top corner of the goal.
- Owning a 4-0 cushion at intermission, Mazambani once again beat the Owls' netminder as she took advantage of a scrum in front of the goal to tally her third score of the night with 3:45 remaining before the half.
- Following a scoreless third period, Amherst broke away down the stretch, potting three fourth quarter goals to capture the 7-0 clean sheet. A turnover by the Owls in their own territory set up a Maynard score in the 47th minute, before markers by Caroline Donahue '22 and Beth Williamson '23 after corner opportunities set the final score. BY THE NUMBERS
- Kaitlin Broda '23 (3-0) earned the win for Amherst in between the pipes, making two stops in 52:29, while Sara Nidus '24 went untested in 7:31 in relief. Molly Edmark (1-5) took the loss for Keene State, registering 13 saves.
- Dominating play in the offensive zone, the Mammoths owned the edge in shots (30-4), shots on target (20-2), and corner opportunities (14-4).
