SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Ranked No. 10 in Division III in the United Soccer Coaches National top-25 preseason poll, the Amherst College women's soccer team put on a clinic in their 2021 season opener as they potted eight first half scores and held the home to just one shot in the contest to power past Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, Thursday evening at the MHC Soccer Field.
With the win, Amherst opens the year at 1-0-0, while Mount Holyoke drops to 1-2-0 on the season. The Mammoths return to action this Saturday, Sept. 11 when they kick off conference play with a 2:30pm matchup at Bowdoin College.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mammoths needed just 43 seconds to record what stood as the game-winner as Alexa Juarez '23 headed a shot past the Lyons' netminder following a corner kick by Sophia Fikke '22.
- Striking twice in less than three minutes, senior Natalie Landau notched back-to-back scores via an unassisted marker from outside the box that curled into the right side of the net and an assist from Juarez to give Amherst a 3-0 lead.
- Sophomore Liza Katz logged her first collegiate goal with 11:50 remaining in the first half, burying a rebound, before first-year Patience Kum registered the first two scores of her collegiate career with consecutive unassisted markers just 2:39 apart.
- The third Mammoth to pick up their first goal donning the Purple & White, Abby Schwartz '24 made it a 7-0 game with 4:10 remaining before sending a dish to Izzy Geneve '23 with 2:48 on the clock to earn an assist and push the score to 8-0 at the break.      Â
- Amherst's final goal of the game came 11:11 into the second frame, with Katz's second score of the night extending the visitor's lead to 9-0.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Mika Fisher '24, Katya Besch '25, and Brooke Harrington '22 each saw time in net for the Mammoths, with Fisher (1-0-0) going unchallenged in the start to earn the win and Harington making a stop on the Lyons lone shot on target in the matchup.
- Holding Mount Holyoke without a shot in the first half, Amherst owned a 21-1 advantage in shots on frame, and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
