Field Hockey Dominant in Season Opening 8-0 Victory

With the win, Amherst opens the year at 1-0, while Mount Holyoke falls to 0-2 on the season. The Mammoths return to action this Saturday, Sept. 11 when they kick off conference play with a 2:30pm matchup at Bowdoin College.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Natalie Hobbs '23 set up the Mammoths' first score of the season 5:14 seconds into the first quarter as the junior sent a long, perfectly placed pass from the right sideline to the streaking Abbey Kays '25 who was sprinting to the far post. Besting her defender in the footrace, Kays tallied her first collegiate goal as she redirected the ball past the Lyons' netminder.
  • Doubling the Mammoths' advantage with 4:42 on the clock, Muffie Mazambani '24 potted the first points of her collegiate career as she collected a rebound in a scrum in front of the net and sent a shot over the goal line.
  • Sneaking a low shot inside the left post, Beth Williamson '23 capitalized on a corner opportunity to make it a 3-0 game midway through the second frame with an assist from Mazambani.
  • Taking a 4-0 lead into halftime, Hobbs dribbled through four Lyon defenders as she cut across the circle before beating the Mount Holyoke keeper in an unassisted highlight reel play.
  • A score by Caroline Donahue '22 on a redirect with 7:36 to play in the third quarter put Amherst ahead by five before Sam Maynard '25 spun around a defender to log her first score donning the Purple & White.
  • Williamson and Courtney Lowe '22 rounded out scoring for the Mammoths, with the duo each adding a goal to the board in the fourth quarter to lift Amherst to the 8-0 victory.
