#9 Nazareth Holds Off Amherst For 3-1 Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Ninth-ranked Nazareth College held off a late Amherst rally and remained undefeated this season with a 3-1 win over the Amherst College women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

The reigning NESCAC champion Mammoths (2-5) now break for the holidays and return to action on Sunday, Jan. 2, hosting UMass Boston at 3 p.m. The Golden Flyers (12-0) enter the break as one of three unbeaten teams remaining in Division III hockey.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nazareth senior winger Madison Nichols opened the scoring for the Golden Flyers for the second game in a row, scoring her eight goal of the season 2:48 into the game.
  • The Golden Flyers made it 2-0 by the end of the first when senior captain Nikolle Van Stralen scored her third goal of the season at the 14:50 mark.
  • The game was scoreless throughout the second and much of the third until the final minutes. With the Mammoths goalie pulled for an extra skater, first-year winger Alyssa Xu scored with 1:03 to go, wrapping around the net to deposit her third goal of the season.
  • The Mammoths continued the extra-skater pressure but were unable to convert and Nazareth senior winger Hailey Redders sent the puck the length of the ice for an empty-net goal to put the game away.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Mammoths were not whistled for a single penalty in the game. The Golden Flyers went to the box five times but were perfect on the penalty kill.
  • Shots on goal were nearly even in the game with the Mammoths holding a 26-25 edge. Golden Flyers senior goalie Adrianna Brehm made a season-high 25 saves to earn the win.
