AMHERST, Mass. -- Six Mammoths scored their first collegiate goals as the Amherst College women's ice hockey team unleashed the offense in a 7-3 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon in the home opener at Orr Rink.
Junior forward Carley Daly scored a goal and added two assists for the reigning NESCAC champion Mammoths (1-2), who handed the Valiants (5-2-1) just their second loss of the young season. Amherst is back in action tomorrow (Nov. 28), hosting Johnson & Wales at 3 p.m. for another non-conference tilt at Orr Rink.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- First-year Gia Seravalli opened the scoring for the Mammoths, poking in the puck in front of the net for her first collegiate goal at the 6:04 mark. Classmates Anna Baxter and Alyssa Xu set up the goal and recorded their first collegiate points.
- The Valiants answered immediately, as Hannah Beckman won the puck right from the ensuing faceoff and took it to the net to score her third goal of the season and tie the game at 1-1.
- Sophomore Elizabeth DeCarlo gave the Mammoths the lead again with her first collegiate goal at 12:07, scoring on a pass in front of the net from Leslie Schwartz.
- First-year Sydney Raaths added her first at 14:23, taking a pass from Angelina Wiater in the slot and firing in her first collegiate goal on Wiater's second assist of the game.
- Daly made it 4-1 before the first period was over, backhanding in a rebound for her second goal of the year at the 18:01 mark.
- Sophomore Rylee Glennon scored 5:57 into in the second period as she got the puck at center ice and skated in on a two-on-one, firing a shot from the slot for her first collegiate goal.
- Senior Elizabeth Holubiak made it 6-1 on the power play later in the third, deflecting in a pass from Daly for her first collegiate goal.
- Baxter joined the scoring party on another power-play opportunity in the final frame. Camped out in front of the net, she deflected a shot from Glennon over the goalie's shoulder to collect her first collegiate goal at the 14:49 mark. Schwartz collected her second assist of the game on the play.
- The Valiants got one back in the final minute of the second period as sophomore Grace Genest fired a shot from the point that trickled in for her second goal of the season.
- Manhattanville scored once more in the third as first-year Annie Niedermier stole the puck at center ice and took it herself for her second goal of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Daly recorded the second three-point game of her career and her first-period goal stood as the eventual game-winner.
- All-American goalie Caitlin Walker needed to make only 8 saves to earn the win as the Mammoths held a 45-11 lead in shots on goal. The disparity in shots was especially pronounced in the first two periods as Amherst had a 20-4 advantage in the first and a 21-3 advantage in the second before the third period was even at 4-4.
- Each side had three power-play opportunities and the Mammoths were 2-for-3 on the power play and perfect on the penalty kill.
