UTICA, N.Y. -- Three Beacons tallied a goal and an assist each to lead UMass Boston to a 4-1 win over the Amherst College men's ice hockey team in the third-place game of the Utica College Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday at the Adirondack Bank Center.
The Mammoths (1-3) are back in action on Friday (Dec. 3), visiting 10th-ranked Trinity for a NESCAC duel. The Beacons (5-4-1) snap a three-game skid in the first meeting between these in-state foes in 10 years.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Beacons struck first as first-year Alex Duncan scored his fifth goal of the season 7:28 into the game and UMass Boston made it 2-0 by the end of the first when sophomore Owen Bourdow scored his second of the season on the power play.
- The Beacons capitalized on another power-play opportunity in the first minute of the second period as first-year Nolan Barrett scored his first collegiate goal. Another second-period goal from senior Chris Peters made it a 4-0 game entering the third period.
- The Mammoths broke through in the third period when senior Mitchell Shults used a backhand flick to score his first goal of the season. Sophomore Ryan Tucker picked up his first collegiate point with an assist on the play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Mammoths outshot the Beacons, 28-24, but were held at bay by UMass Boston netminder Connor McAnanama, who made 27 saves to earn his first collegiate win.
- Amherst held a 30-28 edge at the faceoff dot but went 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Beacons were 2-for-4 on the man advantage.
