Vera's Triple-Double Powers Undefeated #16 Mammoths to 60-54 Win at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year guard AnLing Vera recorded a triple-double in her fifth career game to boost the Amherst College women's basketball team to a 60-54 win over Bates College in a non-conference meeting on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gym. Vera tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists for the first triple-double in Amherst history.

The Mammoths (5-0), ranked 16th in the nation in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, are back in action on Tuesday visiting defending GNAC champion Emmanuel in a clash of two undefeated teams. Today's game against the Bobcats (2-1) was a quickly organized non-conference game between two NESCAC foes after Amherst's originally scheduled match on this date at New Jersey City was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Gothic Knights' program.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Bobcats got off to a hot start, building an 11-4 lead in the first quarter, but the Mammoths responded with a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game on a Courtney Resch layup that made it 13-11.
  • Brianna Gadaleta hit back-to-back buckets for the Bobcats to reclaim the lead but Lauren Pelosi answered with a three to put the Mammoths on top, 16-15, at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Mammoths never gave up the lead from there but Bates kept it close through the second. Amherst scored eight unanswered points spanning halftime to turn a 2-point edge into a 10-point cushion.
  • The Mammoths led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter but the defense on both sides took over in the fourth as Bates held a 7-4 lead in the final frame. Vera entered the fourth with 16 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds and grabbed 3 more boards to clinch the triple-double, with her final rebound coming on the offensive end.
