BOSTON -- Senior Jade DuVal tied the Amherst school record with 21 rebounds and classmate Lauren Pelosi scored 14 points as the Amherst College women's basketball team remained unbeaten this season with a 56-48 win over Emmanuel on Tuesday night at the Yawkey Center.
The Mammoths (6-0), ranked eighth in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll, have now won eight straight games dating back to last season after handing the Saints (4-1) their first loss of the season. Amherst is back in action on Friday (Dec. 3) with a non-conference matchup at Little Three rival Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The game was a defensive battle through the first three quarters. The Saints took a quick 4-0 lead but the Mammoths answered with a 6-0 run as DuVal put back the layup after one of her 9 offensive rebounds to give Amherst a 6-4 lead.
- The Mammoths held the lead for the rest of the game but the contest was close throughout. After Courtney Resch hit a three to give the Mammoths a 17-9 lead midway through the second quarter, the Saints closed the half with 7 straight points to cut the lead to 17-16 at the half.
- A 10-3 run in the third quarter stretched the Amherst lead to 10 points and the score was 35-25 after three quarters. After being held under 10 points in each of the first three quarters, the Saints found their offense in the third, outscoring the Mammoths, 23-21, in the final frame. The Saints got back within two points midway through the fourth, but Pelosi scored 5 points in a 9-1 run that got the Amherst lead back to 10 and the Mammoths held on down the stretch.
BY THE NUMBERS
- DuVal's 21 rebounds match the Amherst record set by Sam Ince '97 in a game against Rhode Island College on Nov. 21, 1993. She also scored 10 points for her second double-double of the season.
- Pelosi set a new career high with her 14 points as Amherst's two highest scorers (Pelosi and DuVal) both came off the bench.
- Senior Dani Valdez tallied 10 rebounds as the Mammoths outrebounded the Saints, 54-34.
- First-year AnLing Vera dished a game-high 7 assists.
