Mammoths Fall in Season Opener at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. -- Five Continentals scored as Hamilton College handed the Amherst College men's ice hockey team a 5-1 defeat in the season opener for both NESCAC teams on Friday night at Sage Rink.

The Mammoths are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 23, when they return home to take to the ice at Orr Rink for the home opener against Division II St. Michael's.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Mammoths netted the first goal of the season on the power play in the first period when sophomore defenseman Connor McGinnis got the puck to senior forward Matteo Mangiardi, who slipped through the Hamilton defense to score his sixth career goal. It was the first collegiate point for McGinnis in his collegiate debut.
  • The Continentals tied the game in the final minute of the first period on a power-play goal from senior captain Chad Varney.
  • Hamilton took the lead with two goals late in the second period as freshman Grisha Gotovets scored his first collegiate goal with 1:46 on the clock and senior captain Nick Rutigliano beat the buzzer, scoring with 0.1 seconds left on the clock.
  • The Continentals bolstered their lead in the third period with goals from Matt Gellerman and Jordi Jefferson.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Continentals held a 29-25 edge in shots on goal and both goalies made 24 saves with senior Sean Storr earning the win for Hamilton and junior Dan Dachille manning the crease for Amherst.
  • There was no shortage of penalties in the first game for each team in a year-and-a-half. The Mammoths were whistled for 10 minor penalties and the Continentals served 7 minors.
