ROSEMONT, Pa. -- Senior Tim McCarthy scored 15 points and added three assists and three steals to lead five Mammoths in double figures as the Amherst College men's basketball team opened its season with a 92-56 win over Rosemont College on Sunday afternoon at Alumnae Hall. The win marked the debut on the Amherst sidelines for head coach Marlon Sears, whose first season leading the Mammoths was delayed by a year after last season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mammoths now return to LeFrak Gymnasium for their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. against Colby-Sawyer, while the Ravens (0-3) will look for their first win of the season against Kean on the same night.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Ravens forward Zaire Mitchell scored twice to stake Rosemont to a quick 5-3 lead, but Amherst answered with a 10-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
- The Amherst lead grew to 22 in the first half when senior Grant Robinson hit a pull-up jumper to make the score 46-24 at halftime.
- The Ravens got back within 20 on a couple of occasions in the second half, but after Rosemont forward Jordany Pierre hit a three to cut the Amherst lead to 57-38, the Mammoths went on an 19-4 run capped by back-to-back threes from McCarthy and Robinson that had the Mammoths up by 35 with eight minutes to go.

- Sophomore Mohammed Alausa scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. He was one of seven Mammoths making their collegiate debuts as Canin Reynolds chipped in 11 points and 3 steals, Ryker Vance and Will Scherer netted 6 points each, Bobby Sommers hit a three for his first collegiate points and Noah Helmke and Christopher Mitchell also made it into the game.
- Senior Garrett Day scored 12 points and junior Michael Schretter tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double.
- Robinson dished 5 assists to go along with his 7 points.
- Freshman Damian Rawls led the Ravens with 12 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.
- The Mammoths shot 56 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc while holding the Ravens to 38 percent from the field and 29 percent on three-pointers.
- While both teams had double-digit turnovers, Amherst managed to capitalize with a 23-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
