AMHERST, MA – The No. 15 Amherst College women's soccer team welcomed Trinity College to Gooding Field on Tuesday night for their final regular season contest and battled the Bantams into overtime before prevailing, 3-2, via a winner by
Ruby Hastie '22 in the 98
th minute. The win gave the Mammoths the #1 seed in the NESCAC postseason tournament that begins this Saturday October 30, as they finished the regular season with a 13-1-1 overall record and 8-1-1 record in the NESCAC. Interestingly enough, the Mammoths drew a rematch with Trinity for their NESCAC quarterfinal matchup, which is currently scheduled for 12PM this Saturday at Hitchcock Field.
On Tuesday night, the Mammoths jumped out to a 1-0 lead after an own goal by Trinity in the 36
th minute.
Isabel Stern '23 rang a shot off the crossbar that careened off a Trinity Bantam and ended up in the back of the net for a Mammoth goal. Stern was credited with the goal, her second of the season.
Just seven minutes later, Dot Tilden evened the score for the Bantams as she collected a cross from Sadie Rudolph and fired a shot past Amherst keeper
Mika Fisher. Whitney Hoban began the break that resulted in a Bantam transition goal. Trinity came out with high energy in the first half and actually outshot the Mammoths 8-5. They carried that momentum from the late first half goal into the second half and took a 2-1 lead on a great individual effort from Sadie Rudolph in the 61
st minute.
It took just four minutes for the Mammoths to respond, as
Liza Katz '24 sent a beautiful ball from the left side of the box into a dangerous area and
Claire Nam '22 finished a header to even the score, 2-2. The equalizer was Nam's second goal in the last three games and Katz's team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Natalie Landau '22 saw two excellent opportunities in the remaining minutes of regulation and had a shot deflect off the crossbar and out. Amherst increased their offensive production and outshot the Bantams 10-6 in the second half and 18-16 for the full 90 minutes.
Ruby Hastie '22 buried the lone shot on goal for either team in overtime and the Mammoths left Gooding Field with the #1 seed in the NESCAC tournament and a rematch with Trinity scheduled for Saturday in the NESCAC quarterfinals.
Mika Fisher '24 made three saves for the Mammoths, all coming in the first half, and Bantams' goalkeeper Jennifer Stuart recorded three saves for Trinity.
