AMHERST, MA – The No. 11 Amherst College men's soccer team bounced back from a weekend loss against No. 3 Tufts with a 1-0 win under the lights at Gooding Field against visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
German Giammattei '22 scored the game-winning goal in the 39
th minute on an unbelievable free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. The 2019 Division III National Player of the Year scored directly on a strike that curved into the top right corner and past the WPI keeper. With the weeknight win, the Mammoths move to 10-2-1 on the year, while WPI drops to 7-4-3.
Amherst moved quickly down the field in the opening minute and
Ada Okorogheye '24 sent the first shot of the game just wide of the net. WPI's best chance came in the 24
th minute as Francho Bazzini's shot rang the crossbar and bounced out.
The Mammoths outshot WPI 7-5 in the first half and Giammattei scored the only tally of the game and his team leading seventh goal of the season as the half drew to a close.
Andrew Barkidjija '23 nearly doubled Amherst's lead in the 53
rd minute as he cut into the box on his left foot and hit a shot that slide inches by the post. The second 45-minutes saw an even 4-4 effort in shots for both teams and Amherst was able to hold onto their one-goal-lead to capture their tenth victory of the season.
Amherst and WPI both put four shots on frame and
Kofi Hope-Gund '22 recorded four saves in his fifth start of the season. WPI keeper Roe Hendrick finished the match with three saves.
