AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's soccer team took to the field for their second-to-last regular season contest and Senior Day this Saturday as the Colby College Mules traveled to Hitchcock Field. The Mammoths were dominant in a 2-0 victory, outshooting the Mules 13-2 and holding the advantage in shots on goal, 6-0. With the NESCAC win, Amherst moves to 11-2-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in conference, while Colby drops to 6-7-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the NESCAC.
With just one regular season match remaining (vs. Trinity 10/26), the Mammoths sit third in the NESCAC standings behind Connecticut College (7-2 in NESCAC) and Tufts University (6-1-2 in NESCAC). The Mammoths defeated Connecticut College, 2-0, back on September 25
th and fell to Tufts in overtime on October 16
th. Interestingly, all 10 NESCAC teams will play on October 26
th to determine the final standings and playoff seeding for the NESCAC Tournament.
On Saturday at Hitchcock Field, the Mammoths got on the board right before halftime when
Ada Okorogheye '24 raced past Colby's defensive line and sent a dangerous cross in front of the Mules' net.
Laurens ten Cate '25 was able to finish the cross, scoring his first collegiate goal and putting the Mammoths up 1-0. Keeping the pressure up in the beginning of the second half, Amherst doubled the score in the 70
th minute when
Niall Murphy '25 turned over a Mules defender and found
Jonny Novak '25, who slotted a shot past Colby's goalkeeper. The tally that put the Mammoths up 2-0 was also Novak's first collegiate goal.
Before a game that featured two Mammoths scoring their first goal as a Mammoth, the Amherst men's soccer team honored the Class of 2022,
