Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a evenly matched battle that saw only 12 shots taken between the sides, senior Bryce Ciambella made the most of his opportunities and found the nylon twice in the first half as the No. 11 Amherst College men's soccer team downed conference foe Connecticut College, 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Tempel Green Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 10-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in league play, while Connecticut College falls to 8-3-0 on the season (4-3-0 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they welcome Colby College to Hitchcock Field for a 2:30 p.m. conference bout, while the Camels take on Tufts on Oct. 15 at home beginning at 2 p.m.
Finding the back of the net midway through the first half, Ciambella gave Amherst a 1-0 edge at the 20:12 mark on an unassisted tally. Taking advantage of a miscommunication between two Camel defenders, Ciambella ran onto a misplaced pass and buried a shot from six yards out into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Ciambella made it a 2-0 contest just over eight minutes later as Andrew Orozco '17 sent a perfectly placed pass from midfield to the streaking Ciambella. Gathering the ball at the top left corner of the box, Ciambella chipped a shot over the head of the Camel goalkeeper.
Following nearly 55 minutes of scoreless action, Fikayo Ajayi '19 extended the Purple & White's lead to three at the 82:50 mark. Collecting a pass from Christopher Martin '17, Ajayi rifled a shot into the net to tally his second goal of the season.
Pat Devlin spoiled Amherst's shut out bid in the 85th minute after the Purple & White were called for an infraction inside the box. Tabbed to take the subsequent penalty kick, Devlin tucked a shot inside the left post and past the diving Amherst goalie.
