No. 17 Amherst Suffers First Loss of Season to No. 2 Williams, 1-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Holly Burwick registered six saves but the 17th-ranked Amherst women's soccer team fell short to second-ranked Williams College Saturday, 1-0 at Cole Field.

With the loss, Amherst moves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the NESCAC, while Williams improves to 6-0 and 5-0 in conference play.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Williams dictated the pace in the first half, holding a 10-5 edge in shots, but Amherst rallied in the second half resulting in exciting back and forth play that featured each team registering six shots apiece.   
  • The game's lone goal would come just under 10 minutes into play, with the Ephs' Audrey Thomas notching the game winner. Amherst goalkeeper Burwick was unable to punch the shot of Kristi Kirshe over the top of the net and Thomas proved to be in the right place at the right time as she was able to head the rebound into the netting.
  • First-year Megan Root was nearly able to respond five minutes later, after a corner kick from Sarah Zuckerman '17 found the foot of Root whose volley went just inches wide of the net.
  • The final 80 minutes of action proved scoreless despite both teams earning quality offensive opportunities and multiple shots hitting the post and crossbar.
  • The Ephs held a slight edge in corner kicks, 8-6.
  • Burwick registered six saves for Amherst in the losing effort, while first-year Rubii Tamen led the team in shots on the day with four. Both Delancey King '18 and Tamen recorded a defensive save in the outing.
  • Netminder Tressa Palcheck collected six saves in the shutout victory for Williams. Audrey Thomas tallied a team high three shots on net on her way to securing the game's lone goal and her NESCAC leading 10th of the season.
