NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior co-captain Madeline Tank scored four goals and assisted on a fifth to lead the 10th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to a 7-0 victory in its 2014 season-opener at Connecticut College Wednesday night.

Annika Nygren '16, Taylor Hallowell '17 and Mary Grace Cronin '18 each chipped in with a score as Rachel Tannenbaum '15 recorded the shutout. The three-time All-NESCAC goalkeeper stopped three shots between the posts.

The Camels kept it close in the opening half with some stout defensive play along with some strong net-minding from Ryley van der Velde. Van der Velde turned aside nine Amherst shots in her first collegiate start in the cage.

Tank opened the scoring 9:24 into the contest when she scored on a penalty corner. The Jeffs doubled their advantage 2:40 into the second stanza when Elizabeth Turnbull '18 assisted Tank for a hit from the center of the scoring circle that made it a 2-0 contest.

The senior co-captain tacked on another score with 28:27 remaining in the game as the visitors continued to pull away for the 7-0 triumph.

Amherst returns to action Sunday, Sept. 7 for another NESCAC matchup against fifth-ranked Middlebury on the road. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
