Jeffs Advance Past St. Lawrence, 3-2 in PKs

CANTON, N.Y. – Kieran Bellew's '18 tally in the fifth round of the penalty shootout lifted the 13th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team past No. 9 St. Lawrence University following a 1-1 double overtime draw in Sunday afternoon's NCAA Division III Championship Second Round contest. 

Amherst (14-1-5) advances to the sectional round of the NCAA tournament for the third straight year, while St. Lawrence concludes its season 17-2-2 overall. The Jeffs' will take on a team yet to be determined in third round action on Nov. 22.

After playing to a scoreless tie through 67 minutes of action, Cameron Bean '17 put Amherst on the board when he fired a shot that St. Lawrence keeper Aaron Costello saved. The rebound fell right back to Bean's feet and he was able to slot it in to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead at the 68:39 mark. 

The Saints answered 10 minutes later when Manny Collins redirected the ball into the net on a shot from Harry Copeland to set the score at 1-1. 

St. Lawrence outshot Amherst a combined 10-3 in the two periods of extra time but just one attempt found its way on target, setting up the dramatic shootout finish. 

In the shootout, both teams made goalkeeper changes as Lee Owen '18 entered for the Purple & White, while Ryan Roethel joined the mix for the Saints. In the first round with St. Lawrence shooting first, Mark Provost missed his attempt and Thomas Bull '16 made his to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. After Rob Brandell and Nico Pascual-Leone '16 each missed their shots, Jeremiah Bunton and Gabriel Wirz '15 each made theirs to give Amherst a 2-1 edge. Harry Copeland and Milton Rico '15E each missed their attempts in the fourth round setting up a must-make for the Saints. Dan Hunt delivered to tie the shootout at 2-2, before Bellew notched his decisive winner allowing the Jeffs to advance to the next round in dramatic fashion. 

St. Lawrence held a 27-11 advantage in shots in the contest, but Amherst edged the Saints in shots on goal, 7-5. Bull made three saves in 110 minutes of action, while Costello recorded six saves in 110 minutes. 

Pascual-Leone and Bean each had two shots on goal for Amherst, while Collins had a pair of shots on target for the Saints.
