Jeffs Fall to Middlebury College, 1-0, in NESCAC Quarterfinals

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College outshot Middlebury College, 16-5, but a goal by Katherine Hobbs in the 39th minute lifted the fifth-seeded Panthers to a 1-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Jeffs in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC Quarterfinal women's soccer game at Hitchcock Field.

With the loss, Amherst moves to 11-5-0 on the season, while Middlebury improves to 10-6-0 overall and advances to the NESCAC semifinals. The Panthers travel to top-seeded Williams College for an 11 a.m. contest, while the Jeffs await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Amherst controlled the run of play for much of the first half as the Jeffs outshot Middlebury, 7-3 in the first 45 minutes but could not find the break through goal.

In the 39th minute of action, the Panthers were awarded their only corner kick of the contest and delivered through Hobbs who netted her first collegiate goal. Claire Nishioka lifted the corner to Hobbs who slotted the ball into the net to give Middlebury a 1-0 lead.

The Jeffs continued to apply pressure on the Panthers' defensive third, registering nine shots to Middlebury's two in the second half, but could not find the net, as eight of those shots went off target, while Emily Eslinger made a save to preserve the victory.

Megan Kim '16 and Hannah Guzzi '18 registered three shots each in the losing effort, while Meredith Manley '18 fired a shot on goal. Holly Burwick '16 made a stop in each period for the Purple & White.

Carter Talgo and Jamie Soroka added a shot on goal each for Middlebury.
