Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Greg Singer '16 netted the equalizing goal in the 73rd minute of action, but a goal by Wesleyan University's Adam Cowie-Haskell 4:50 into the first period of overtime lifted the Cardinals to a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over No. 10 Amherst College in Saturday afternoon's men's soccer game at Jackson Field.

With the loss, Amherst moves to 10-1-2 overall, 6-1-2 in NESCAC action. The loss is the Jeffs' first against a conference opponent during the regular season or NESCAC tournament since Oct. 26, 2011 when Conn. College recorded a 3-2 victory. Following that setback, the Purple & White orchestrated a magnificent 37-game unbeaten streak against league competition which is tied for the seventh longest streak in NCAA Division III history, and was the longest active streak heading into today's contest.

The win improves Wesleyan to 7-3-2 on the season, 5-2-0 in conference action.

After playing a scoreless first half that saw both teams register five shots and win four corners, Wesleyan drew first blood when Matt Lynch scored on a feed from Omar Bravo to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the 63:44 mark.

Just under 10 minutes later, Amherst answered through Singer who scored on a pass from Jae Heo '15 to level the match at 1-1, and highlight a half that saw the Jeffs outshoot Wesleyan, 10-3.

Cardinals' goalkeeper finished with seven saves, including five in the second half, while the Purple & White's junior net-minder Thomas Bull made a first half save.

Heading into overtime, Amherst held a 15-9 advantage in shots following regulation, but Wesleyan needed just one shot in the extra frame to notch its thrilling victory.

Haskell finished with three shots to lead the Cardinals, while Christopher Martin '17 and Nico Pascual-Leone '16 combined for eight shots for the Jeffs.

Amherst returns to the pitch in non-conference action on Friday, Oct. 24 at Mount St. Mary College at 7 p.m.
